MetalloBio Wins Five Awards in One Week

MetalloBio and CEO Dr Kirsty Smitten have won five awards for the development of their antimicrobial platform technology this week.

On the 11th of May Dr Kirsty Smitten and research associate Dr Simon Fairbanks attended the Start Up Awards in Newcastle for North East, Yorkshire and the Humber. MetalloBio were nominated for Sheffield Start-up of the Year and Rebel Start-up of the Year. The Rebel Start-up of the Year was sponsored by Tiny Rebel and was given to the most disruptive start-up. MetalloBio won the Rebel Start-up of the Year. There was an overall award for the Start-up of the Year out of the 31 award categories that evening and over 130 finalists. We are very proud to say MetalloBio walked away with the overall award - North East, Yorkshire and the Humber Start-up of the Year.

Co-founder Professor Jim Thomas and MetalloBio then on International Day of Light won the first ever CLF Impact Award for Societal Impact. This follows on from all the work Kirsty and Jim did at the CLF Facility in Harwell using ‘Stimulated Emission Depletion - STED’ microscopy to determine the mechanism of action of MetalloBio’s lead compounds in a range of different bacteria.

Then on the 18th of May Kirsty and Simon attended the Federation of Small Businesses UK National Awards Final 2023 at the National Conference Centre in Birmingham. In February our CEO won the Yorkshire and Humber FSB’s Young Entrepreneur of the Year which resulted in Kirsty being a finalist for the National Award. It was an excellent day for MetalloBio again, Kirsty was awarded the UK Young Entrepreneur of the Year and delivered an excellent speech on the massive threat of antimicrobial resistance on humanity. Kirsty received a standing ovation after discussing MetalloBio’s research and her own personal journey with cancer.

We are very proud to announce, MetalloBio were also awarded the overall award of the evening out of the 144 finalists and 3565 applications. MetalloBio were named the FSB Small Business of the Year. This is an amazing achievement for the MetalloBio team.
